Shameful defections

SIR: The recent victory of the All Progressives Party (APC) in the last presidential and National Assembly elections has triggered a string of defections by politicians to the victorious party.

This is not a good development in the country’s quest to sustaining a virile political system. The danger is in the enthronement of a one-party system in the polity, which would not augur well for our country.

What is needed at this stage of our political development is an enabling environment that would create strong opposition parties to checkmate the excesses of the ruling party.

Those decamping to the wining party should have taken a lesson from the president-elect who refused to change party, despite the gesture extended to him at that time.

The decamping politicians have shown that they are bereft of clear ideology and principle of nurturing a party to stardom like what the present opposition party has done before they were able to clinch power from the ruling party.

Politicians should cultivate the habit of grooming a political party for long period of time to promote the culture of political growth.

The last election has placed Nigeria more on the global stage, due to the transparent and credible nature of the polls.

Therefore, we should not allow ourselves to be the laughing stock with these defections. The interest of the country is paramount, not individuals.
